All At Sea - An Introduction to Sailing

There are very few sports that are quite like sailing. From a gentle and relaxing jaunt where the only real noise to be heard is the wind in the sails and the water lapping against the hull, to the fast paced sport where a gust of wind will catch in the sail driving your vessel forward with a turn of acceleration which you wouldn't have thought possible. It will give you the sense of being at one with nature, yet in an instant can turn to a duel, in an attempt to control and harness those very forces of nature itself.

One of the great things about sailing is that it is so easy to get started. An enthusiastic amateur can soon pick up the basics in a few hours, but it will always offer a challenge which you will never tire of through a lifetime on the water.

Many sailing clubs run open days during the summer, specifically designed for getting people out on the water for the first time, usually in a dinghy.

Dinghy sailing is an ideal introduction to the sport. It has enjoyed an explosion in popularity over recent years and the opportunities to learn via this method are ever increasing, whether at a lake, at sea, a marina or water sports centre. Dinghy sailing tuition is affordable, widely available and will cover all you need to know to get you afloat with qualified supervision.

Once youve experienced dinghies you may want to sign up for a more advanced sailing class and move from dinghies to bigger boats. Perhaps you will see yourself as becoming part of a crew or even have a desire to take up racing. In just a few months, you'll be so confident on the water that you won't even recognize yourself from your pre-sailing days.

Amazingly, although sailing has its own rules of the road, no sailing driving license is required. However, although there is no mandatory qualification for amateur yacht skippers in the UK, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) offer their Yachtmaster Offshore Examination course, which is recognised as the most credible of all yachting qualifications. The RYA offers a number of courses from introductory sailing for first-timers right through to advanced qualifications for those looking to charter their own yacht.

One of the best ways to get your first taste of sailing and to learn the ropes is to incorporate your training into a sailing holiday. By getting hands-on experience over a few days you will become much more confident and adept at your boat handling. Many activity holiday companies now offer these types of breaks incorporating RYA courses.

Sailing is an activity that anyone can enjoy and getting out on the water is a lot easier than you might think! If youre interested in taking up sailing, or perhaps getting back into it after a few years away, then why not contact the RYA who will be able to point you towards your nearest club.

So why not give it a go? You may not be the next Sir Chay Blythe or Dame Ellen MacArthur, but once you get on the water, you may find that you have the same passion for the sport.
